In November 2015 two of our colleagues and friends from AGL Macquarie, were injured following a serious arc flash incident at Liddell Power Station.
The safety of our people and the communities we operate in are our highest priority. We sincerely regret the incident occurred and that two of our colleagues sustained injuries because of the incident. We also acknowledge the distress caused to their family and friends, the disruption to our workplace and concern within our community.
As with all serious workplace safety accidents, SafeWork NSW conducted an investigation to understand how the incident occurred, and how to prevent similar incidents happening again.
A SafeWork NSW investigation is also conducted to determine whether a business, organisation or individuals should face prosecution, following a workplace safety incident.
An alternative to prosecution is for a business or organisation to negotiate an Enforceable Undertaking (EU) with SafeWork NSW.
An EU is a legally binding agreement that a business or organisation will carry out specific safety improvement activities that demonstrate three main principles:
- benefits to the specific workplace
- benefits to the relevant industry,
- benefits to the community.
An EU should also:
- demonstrate on-going commitment to improved safety and compliance
- lead to organisational reform, and
- communicate the consequences of unsafe work practices and the opportunities safe work practices can bring.
In response to the incident from November 2015, AGL Macquarie and SafeWork NSW reached agreement on an EU in April 2018. Implementation of the EU has commenced and will continue over the next two years.
The EU contains a number of initiatives designed to improve electrical critical risk identification, arc flash education, safety culture and leadership at AGL Macquarie and within the energy industry, and also increase electrical safety awareness in the broader community.
We look forward to the safety improvement outcomes from the successful delivery of our EU initiatives.
