Last week, to coincide with International Seal Day, AGL announced its ongoing support of Zoos Victoria and the AGL Marine Response Unit for another year.
The AGL Marine Response Unit - the first-ever state-wide emergency response service for marine wildlife in distress - was established by AGL and Melbourne Zoo in 2013 to reduce the number of seals and other marine life dying unnecessarily in the wild, often a result of becoming entangled in rubbish.
Increased demand and a dedicated team to help
Since it began, the demand for the AGL Marine Response Unit has increased significantly. Since June 2017 to the end of February this year, the unit had undertaken 273 cases – an 18% increase compared to the same period last year. Of these calls, 103 required intervention, where the team attended to the emergency, used affiliated stakeholders like Parks Victoria staff, or asked the public to assist.
Head of Product and Pricing Jo Egan said: “We appreciate the wonderful work of this dedicated team of keepers and vets from Melbourne Zoo which responds to calls and provides assistance for injured marine wildlife in Victoria including seals and penguins. The unit has a vital role to play in helping to rescue wildlife that would otherwise not be attended to in a time-frame that would give them a good chance of survival.”
Melbourne Zoo Director Kevin Tanner said the continuing increase in call outs indicated increasing community awareness that a resource was available to respond to marine wildlife emergencies.
Continuing our support of sustainability
As well as our support of the AGL Marine Response Unit, AGL continues to support Zoos Victoria’s sustainability initiatives, installing more than 300 kilowatts (kW) of solar panels at Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary to assist in their conservation and sustainability projects. We also sponsor the Zoo Twilights concert series, and are naming rights sponsor of Melbourne Zoo’s Wild Seas Precinct.
As a national energy retailer, we believe it is important to support the communities in which we operate, which is why we provide sponsorships across the community and sporting sectors around the country.
