We are living in a time of increased mistrust in institutions, including businesses.  As we have relationships with over 3.6 million customer accounts, it is important that we can demonstrate to our stakeholders the importance we place on ethical business behaviour. Recognising this, we transparently report on ethical conduct, including our performance against targets, in our annual Sustainability Report.

Our Values and Code of Conduct

Our behaviour is guided by the AGL Values and the AGL Code of Conduct. Our Code of Conduct applies to AGL and its Directors, employees and contractors, and sets out a number of general principles of ethical behaviours, including:

  • Acting honestly and with integrity
  • Observing the law, voluntary commitments and internal standards
  • Valuing and maintaining professionalism
  • Respecting confidentiality
  • Managing conflicts of interest
  • Looking after our employees, and
  • Looking after the community.

During FY17, we refreshed our values to support the evolution of our business. Our new company values are:

  • Safety and beyond – caring about our people, making it safe to speak up.
  • Sustainable thinking – thinking of the future today, creating a sustainable tomorrow.
  • Inclusive of all – inclusive of all experiences, united in our success.
  • Focused on what matters – focused on our customers, going further to deliver value.

Our FY17 performance

Our target for FY17 was to achieve zero substantiated issues relating to unacceptable behaviour in the workplace.  Unfortunately, during FY17 we addressed a total of 12 issues relating to unacceptable behaviour in the workplace  (compared with 13 in FY16). As at 30 June 2017, eight of these issues had been substantiated following investigation in accordance with AGL's Workplace Issues Resolution Guidelines. Disciplinary actions were taken included mediation, performance counselling, coaching, education sessions, written warnings and cessation of employment.

Privacy and information security

We are committed to protecting the privacy of our customers, shareholders and other people who we deal with in our business. We carry out our business in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles contained in the Privacy Act 1988, which are designed to protect the personal information of individuals that interact with us. The AGL Privacy Policy sets out our obligations and commitments regarding privacy, as well as the process for customers and others to raise complaints.

We take active measures to secure the personal information that we manage on behalf of individuals and to protect this information from misuse, interference and loss, as well as unauthorised access, modification and disclosure. Protection of personal data is achieved through continuous improvement of our IT security capability and existing security controls. This year we have continued to invest in tools, techniques and training to manage cyber security risks. We're also working in partnership with key information security organisations such as CERT Australia, Energy Impact Partners, and Stay Smart Online, to collaborate and share good practices relating to cyber security.
