The Smith Family to receive $4 million funding support

The Commonwealth Government has announced $4 million funding support which will enable thousands more Australian pre-schoolers to access The Smith Family's proven early maths program, Let’s Count.

Of particular concern to The Smith Family is that one in three children living in the most disadvantaged communities are starting school without basic skills, including numeracy.

So this significant and very welcome investment will help build the early maths skills of more Australian children. It will help The Smith Family set up these children for long-term success in maths – a discipline that will drive our country’s economy and future success.

Having identified a lack of programs in Australia to support the development of maths skills in young children, The Smith Family, together with Professor Bob Perry (Charles Sturt University) and Professor Ann Gervasoni (Monash University) developed Let’s Count.

To date, the program reaches nearly 13,000 children, almost 7,000 parents and 450 educators in disadvantaged communities nationally.

Let’s Count emphasises maths in the everyday and helps children to see maths as relevant, stimulating and fun. The program includes training, support and learning resources for families and early childhood educators.

The Commonwealth funding commitment not only recognises the success of Let’s Count, but is recognition of a successful and innovative partnership between a not-for-profit organisation working with families, educators and its university, philanthropic and corporate partners.

The funding will enable The Smith Family to progress the innovative work they have commenced with terrific support from PwC, to build a sustainable platform for the program.  This will include a continued focus on expanding Let’s Count at Work to many more of their valued philanthropic and corporate partners.

Let’s Count is an exemplar of the sort of research to policy to practice that The Smith Family prides itself on – developing and delivering evidence-based programs with proven results that are scaleable.

Another reason why AGL is proud to have The Smith Family as one of our long term strategic charity partners.
